We are well into the Atlantic Hurricane Season: June 1 — November 30. The peak time is September.

In addition, the severity predictions have been announced.

Erin is now brewing off the Atlantic Coast. You can follow her current status at Weather.com. As of this writing, she is a Category 4 storm.


Several online sites offer suggestions for Hurricane Safety Checklists. Generally, it is recommended that individuals gather these supplies and make plans before the hurricane season. However, if you have not yet done so, now is the time to do so. If you have supplies, check to be sure everything is in a preplanned location, you have fresh water and batteries, and that nothing is outdated. Sometimes gear and items “wander off” during the year: it's time to round them up.


Supplies are essential, but one should also identify their personal evacuation zone, consider evacuation routes, and alternative routes. The map in this link provides designated routes. You can zoom in to determine your specific area. Be sure to top off your gas tank now before demand rises.

January 18th: National Thesaurus Day

The thesaurus, a book that serves as a cross-reference for synonyms, and serves as a guide to effective and precise use of language, is a necessary tool of every writer and even some readers. Dr. Mark Peter Roget (1779–1869) was a British natural theologian, physician, and lexicographer. He suffered from depression his entire life: beginning at the age of eight, his coping mechanism was obsessive list-making. He wrote the first draft of the eponymous English-language thesaurus in 1805, two years prior to Webster beginning the undertaking of his own dictionary. For 47 years he kept it a secret, and finally published it in 1852 at the age of 73, under the title  Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and to Assist in Literary Composition .
