Seasonal Decorations

 

“Tis the Season” to begin to decorate in earnest: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. At our home we blend the adornments of the first two. As you approach our gate, mums and a yard flag begin the theme.


Next up a big greeting from “Bones”, the resident skeleton, as he pedals my decorative bicycle. Last year, he “hung” out in a guest room backlit with black lights to welcome visitors.

As you pass the greenhouse, ghoulish jack-o-lanterns grin nefariously. At night, one is lighted.


On the front porch, a pumpkin planter joins the year round buddha.


At the front door, a harvest note.


Once welcomed in, you’ll see the theme continue with mantel fun…


…And next tabletop decorations on the coffee table and dining room table.


And last, in the kitchen, Halloween towels announce it’s time to collect goodies. Thanksgiving linens await as ready replacements. Do you like to decorate for the holidays; if so do you have a favorite?

Today I am thinking about seeds. As a gardener, vegetables begin as simple seeds. As an author, writing ideas begin as kernels and either blossom into successful work or fail to grow into a completed piece. In both instances, one must have the foresight to recognize what is within the seed. Just as a gardener plans her plot, an author sees not only the night sky but a vision beyond. Memorial Day 2023

Today,  Memorial Day , we honor those who have died serving this country in the US military. Typical remembrances include parades. And visiting cemeteries to mourn loved ones. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten or chosen to ignore the intent of Memorial Day and consider the date one more long weekend off work and an opportunity to picnic and party. Please don’t wish others a “Happy Memorial Day.” The day has a solemn intent: to remember and honor. Do you have a family member or friend who gave all? Do you plan a unique way to honor them? Welcome Winter!

The first snow of 2022 has arrived at our mountaintop home. The temperature is just above freezing this morning, so the beautiful blanket of white won’t last long. A well-stocked bird pantry graces our front porch: fresh water, seeds, and suet. Our favorite winter birds have returned: the titmouse, nuthatch, and juncos. A pair of cardinals, and another of mourning doves feed on the snow-covered ground below. The garden beds are buried in a half-foot of snow, dormant until St. Patrick plantings. A robin-egg blue sky peeks out from the waning storm clouds. We enjoy all of these lovely sights from the fireplace-warmed great room. Enjoy the winter, be safe and stay sound.
