Writing: A daunting endeavor


That’s where I am now in the process of writing my first novel. I’ve completed the first draft and received comments back from my brave beta readers. Now the next step is to “kill my darling,” to dig in, cut and splice, and re-create to make a better product.

With this concept in mind, it’s a good thing I began with a large “rock” of a book, so I have plenty to hone. Better than starting with a pebble!


It was necessary for me to write, I had to do it; as I wrote, it became possible, and now completing the impossible is within sight.

  On the eve of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) proceedings, protestors marched in Chicago and crashed the DNC Welcome Party at the Navy Pier. The games have begun… The  2024 Republican National Convention  was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 to the 18th. National Banana Split Day

I’m eating lunch while searching for an idea for today’s topic: a sandwich and a banana that is past its prime. As I scroll, a yummy photo catches my eye, and so it is, National Banana Split Day. This delicious dessert was invented in 1904 by a pharmacist’s apprentice, David Evans Strickler, at Tassel Pharmacy in LaTrobe, Pennsylvania. In the soda fountain era, many counters shared locations with pharmacies. Banana splits were an immediate hit with the college crowd who eagerly paid 10 cents, double the rate of a regular sundae, for this tasty treat. The split became all the rage in ice cream parlors. The  ideal banana split recipe  includes a banana split in half, topped by 3 scoops of ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry), fudge sauce, whipped cream, and chopped nuts; crowned with maraschino cherries. Thesaurus

  Ironic comment that embodies the word’s exact meaning: a synonym dictionary. While the word conjures up images of prehistoric beings, in reality, its definition is more recent. The word comes from Greek  θησαυρός  and literally means treasure, treasury, or storehouse. As an Author I employ a thesaurus regularly to sharpen my pencil: to clarify… and amplify. Do you struggle to find the exact word to describe the item, action or emotion you’re trying to convey? If so, a thesaurus may be the ticket to your destination.
